FAI's main purpose is to support hospitals, health systems, and physician practices in making vital decisions that are at the core of quality improvement efforts. We provide high quality reviews in a timely and confidential manner, at competitive pricing.
What sets FAI apart?
- Quality:
- Physician direction, oversight and performance of the peer review process that is unsurpassed in the field;
- Physician reviewers that give succinct and definitive opinions and stand behind their work;
- We listen to our client to understand why the review is needed and discuss options as to how best to meet that need. Our approach leads to determining the preferred intervention which may not involve external review. Often the approach best involves onsite review, education, direct observation or intervention.
- Cost Effective:
- When external review is best we often begin with a small sample size that produces an objective and meaningful review.
- We do not charge extra for “expediting” a review. Our normal turn-around-time is 8-10 calendar days from when we gain access to the records;
- We offer not-to-exceed pricing. Our final report includes a follow-up call with the physician reviewer to present the findings to the appropriate audience;
- Our professional fees are some of the lowest in the industry.
Reasons to contact FAI for assistance with External Peer Review
- When there is the need to confirm practitioner skill, technique or knowledge;
- Evaluating competency at initial appointment, before independently providing patient care;
- To fulfill Focused or Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE/OPPE) requirements that cannot be met internally;
- When there is only one particular specialist or sub-specialist on your medical staff or group practice (lack of internal resource);
- To review competency when practitioners are introducing new technology or procedures that no existing member of the medical staff has privileges to perform at your hospital;
- Where there is limited time for existing medical staff members to perform EPR ; and
- When the internal clinical review may result in legal or due process action, EPR can provide the organization with a pertinent strategy and/or resolve the issue in a collegial manner without triggering a hearing or appeal.
During the past several years, it has become more difficult for the medical staff to perform objective peer review. Physician and hospital “alignment” and physicians requesting (and getting) employment or contracts for their services have caused a dramatic reduction in the “pool” of objective physician reviewers on the staff. It seems that physicians are either partners or competitors with each other, leaving many physicians on the medical staff to request external peer review (EPR) for their own case review rather than have an internal review performed by a colleague on the staff who may have a conflict of interest.
The video below demonstrates a number of sound EPR practices and may serve as an excellent orientation on EPR for your leaders and physicians who are involved with the peer review function.
